The Fonze

I happened to see Henry Winkler aka The Fonze on Sky News this morning talking about his experiences of dyslexia and his work in British schools helping to promote a new way of educating children with special needs and learning difficulties. I loved what he had to say and found him really upbeat and inspirational.
His message to kids? "When I sign autographs for children I write: 'You have greatness within you.' When I speak to them, I say: 'It's your job to figure out what your gift is-to dig down deep inside yourself, get it, and give it to the world."

I also love the Hollywood film director, David Lynch's work in trying to bring daily meditation sessions into schools - I would love to see a holistic side to education rolled out in all schools. So many children don't fit the box in schools, my son included, and although I am so lucky he has such fantastic support I know we are right at the beginning of his school life and it probably won't always be so easy.

Asked what advice he'd give parents about helping kids with learning difficulties pursue their dreams, Winkler says: "Adults' job on the earth - apart from curing cancer or figuring out the next new bicycle - is to give children a sense of self. Otherwise, that child will never be able to meet their potential." His second piece of advice flows naturally from the first: "It's really, really important," he says, "not to define yourself by the way your child succeeds - or doesn't. If you look closely at them and listen carefully, you'll find there's lots to celebrate about them besides their grades."
(I'll try to remember that next time my son has locked himself in the bathroom to write me one of his regular tantrum letters and still has to shout out from under the door, 'How do you spell hate?'!!!)

Launch Party!

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who popped along to my little launch and pre-Christmas shop today. It was really lovely and great for me to get some feedback and see what was popular and what wasn't. It's really funny because the things I thought would sell (the notelets/stationary sets etc) didn't at all, but the Pebble Pets, which I was a bit hesitant about even putting out, were very loved and sold out. My new journal was popular too and the canvases which aren't actually on my website. The personalised bags were a bit hit too and I love all the designs and colours I can make with them so looking forward to getting stuck into my orders now. My friend Claire gave me the great idea of a Spring party for next year (can't believe I'm planning already!) focussing more on all my party goods, banners, cupcake toppers, paper cones etc so I will look forward to that.
Enjoy your weekend x

slime!

Picture and recipe on http://dabbled.org/

I am so tempted to make this slime featured on the Dabbled blog. I feel quite scared by my excitement at seeing this post and immediately started visualising all the colours I could try and smells I could add! But the only thing that puts me off are the ingredients which inlclude Borax. In the tiny quantities used here I am sure it is perfectly safe but becuase Blooming Kids aims to make all products as organic/eco-friendly as possible I'm not sure this is one for me.
I don't think I can resist trying it though...just to see what it turns out like!

Stress, nerves, worry...

Feel like escaping to this house for a day by the choppy ocean..or maybe I haven't got over my love of the cheesy film Nights in Rodanthe!

Been feeling really anxious about my first 'launch' party as busy making stuff but not sure how much to make as I don't know what will be popular and what might sell...if anything! Also feel a little uncomfortable about putting myself out there as everything is personal taste and people might be like, 'Oh............?' (cue uncomfortable silence).
Any tips from bloggers on craft markets and the whole vibe of selling then I would be very grateful!
Talking of bloggers, one of my favourites dropped off the radar for a while and I only recently discovered it was a computer error and I actually had a couple of months worth of her posts to catch up on! She makes fantastic monsters with fabulous personalities all of their own and is one of my craft inspirations Down Under, so if anyone fancies popping by Cath's blog at chunkychooky.blogspot.com/ I am sure you will enjoy it (and if she's reading this, it's not so I get a prize!)
Think I am going to have a night off from making and computers ...but sadly, there is no wine in the house so looks like tea and toast and a hot bath instead. Sigh.

half-term catch up

Hope everyone enjoyed their half-term break - we did! Had some lovely lazy days ...if you don't count Tom putting make-up on all his little sister's teddies, filling empty toy buckets with water and spilling them everywhere and emptying perfume bottles on the floor!

To keep him amused I made him a den out of cushions and sheets which kept him entertained for a whole lovely day and we also enjoyed a gorgeous day out at The Enchanted Forest, Groombridge, Kent on Halloween. It is a really magical place and the children all dressed up for the occasion. We also managed to squeeze in a bit of Trick or Treating around our block and our rule was only to knock on houses with pumpkins so I don't think we were unwelcome visitors anywhere! I made up some paper cones filled with sweets for any trick or treaters who knocked on our door and heard lots of little voices saying they were the 'best'!

Work wise, I am busy creating and making for a Blooming Kids launch party in my own home on November 13 followed by my first little market stand at a Mind, Body, Spirit Fair in Maldon, Essex on November 15th. I do a Blooming Buddha range more geared towards adults and featuring uplifting, positive messages on bags and notebooks which I hope will go down well. I will also be selling some of my children's range for parents there who may be looking for some eco-friendly stocking fillers!
